The National Museum of Industrial History's (NMIH) latest exhibit, Hot Off the Press: Printing and Papermaking, a hands-on look at how the printed word Show More...revolutionized the spread of knowledge throughout the world, debuts this week. From the Gutenberg press to linotype machines, like those seen in the hit movie The Post, NMIH's exhibit gives an in-depth and interactive look at how printing presses, paper, and ink were used to spark the most influential industry on the planet.
The exhibit includes rare printings, including 17th Century translations, the first German-translated Bible printed in the Colonies, and the Ephrata Martyrs' Mirror, the largest book printed in Colonial America. Paired with these texts are working printing presses that visitors will be able to use to print take-home mementos, a one-of-a-kind scale model of a Fourdrinier papermaking machine, and mosaics saved from the now-demolished Bethlehem Steel Printery.. ...Show Less

These "Steeples and Steel" tours pay tribute to immigrants who left their homelands in search of a better life in America, many becoming steelworkers. Show More... A guided minibus leaves from St. John's Windish Lutheran Church, 617 E. Fourth Street, Bethlehem. On the first hour of the tour, through the neighborhoods and churches of South Bethlehem, a representative from the South Bethlehem Historical Society relates the history of working class communities. The second hour is a steelworker-guided tour of the site of the flagship Bethlehem Steel plant, including an introduction to Bethlehem's Hoover Mason Trestle walkway. The tour package also includes an Eastern European goulash lunch, and an "open house".
This season's tour dates are August 18, September 15 and November 3 with tours at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM.. ...Show Less

Learn the art of papermaking, printing, bookbinding, and paper engineering with experts at the National Museum of Industrial History! Participants will Show More...gain appreciation for the intensive processes of making paper, setting type, and creating an end product in a three hour workshop with industry experts and utilize authentic industrial artifacts to learn these lost arts.
Throughout the workshop participants will learn the history of these processes and learn how industrialization changed the industry. Two sessions will be held, one on Sunday, August 19th from 1pm to 4pm centered on youth and family instruction, and another on Thursday, August 23rd from 6pm to 9pm, geared towards adults.
Advanced registration is required. The family/youth session (ages 10+ suggested) is $35 per person (if parents are participating they must register for the session) and the adult session is $50 per person. Members receive a 10% discount.. ...Show Less
